Ken was recruited to the local Winnipeg weightlifting club in 1977, at age sixteen, by a neighbour who realized his potential. At that time Ken was enrolled in other sports, but it didn’t take long before he had developed a passion for weightlifting, and made it his primary focus.
As an athlete, Ken made several accomplishments including numerous provincial records to go along with provincial and national championships. At the peak of his career, Ken was a member of the national weightlifting team, and avidly represented Canada at a number of international competitions. In 2004 after a long break in his career, Ken returned to the sport as a competitive master level weightlifter. During his “comeback” Ken again achieved top results at master level competitions.
Ken developed his hunger for coaching weightlifting when his two sons Eric and Sean became competitive in the sport. Ken undertook the certification process to become an NCCP level III weightlifting coach and began coaching within the Winnipeg club as an assistant coach alongside Mirek Korkowski. With Mirek relocating to Nanaimo, B.C in 2014, Ken has taken on the role of head coach at the Winnipeg location of the Hercules Weightlifting Club.
Throughout his time of involvement in the sport as both athlete and coach, Ken has gained the experience required to guide athletes in all aspects of weightlifting no matter their level, experience and goals. In addition to coaching the club, Ken continues to support the growth of Manitoba Weightlifting Association through his past involvement as President and current position as Vice President – Technical.
